Actually I'm the one who disagree with sleeping while teacher is educating us something in class; meanwhile, I believe it's the teacher's job to make students learn something useful in class instead of wasting time on some boring pages. Furthermore, I think most of the reasons that students sleep in class are related to the teachers teaching method.
However, it depends on the teacher's purpose for teaching. If he/she teaches for making money, believe me, both of the teacher and students won't enjoy the class, and bad attitude will be conducted to students. It makes a bad cycle.
And there are some teachers lingering on area of WANNA-TEACH-THEM-WELL and DOING-NOTHIG-WITH-THE-WISH. Of course most of the teachers I believe they all want to help us, but some of them do it in an inappropriate way and which doesn't suit us at all.
But I'm a good student, and I don't sleep in class even if I think it's a super boring class, I still believe I can learn some other things in it such as analyzing teachers' thoughts.
Since there are not so much good students around this environment, it's better for those who really want to teach students with a patient heart and interesting learning methods to come and help students in Taiwan. It's a hopeless learning island since most people have been bribed into doing nothing but making money for their own. The whole test system is twisted to an unbelievable horror! How many of them really care about those who want to be educated well!?
But we will find a way to upgrade ourselves instead of being submerged in this world.

I think every lesson should try to put several students to sleep or it is not a successful lesson-- no, no just kidding.
ReplyDeleteThere is a saying in the US that "education is a process not a product". In otherwords, education is about learning how to think and apply ideas; it is not a body of knowledge. Unfortunately, in my experience both teachers and students in Taiwan seem to think of education as a product-- a thing that you could hold. They see imagine that students are empty glasses and teachers and buckets of water filling those glasses. It's a quite absurd and very old-fashioned idea of education, really because students are never asked to think for themselves in this model.
However, I think students and teachers both have to learn to give a little. Many students in Taiwan are very uncomfortable unless they are being told what to remember, what to memorize. Some people freeze up and don't do anything or get confused if they are taught in an unfamiliar way.
At the same time, I think you are right that teachers should do a better job in engaging students more. Do you have any specific suggestions for classes? (any of your classes)
I agree with you on sleeping in class. I think it's not only very disrespectful to the teacher, you're also neglecting your duties as a student. Yeah, we all have days when we're super tired or many something serious happened, but in general, it's best to pay attention in class, or at least ACT like you're paying attention. I learned in psychology that, your body language actually does affect your mood. For example, if you act gloomy and down, then you will really be more likely to feel that way. Ok i'm blabbering.. But you get my point. :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I saw the message you sent me on msg. Thank you so much for your compliment. :) But I've been kind of down lately so my attitude toward life has changed a little bit. I hope I can get myself back together and I'll write more optimistic entries. AND I really love your blog. From reading your entries, I can tell that you're a very optimistic girl yourself. You see life in a different way than most of us. Also, jia yo on your performances! I look forward to seeing more of your performance clips and hearing your beautiful voice. :)
I agree with your on this issue. In reality, most students in Taiwan seldom asked teachers questions and even seldom asked them to change their teaching style( it's very difficult to change one's habbit imediately). Even though there are exist boring classes here, it's a good attitude to concentrate on any kind of classes.
